Comparison To My Work

Whilst looking at my finished first attempt/mock up idea for my final piece i thought it resembled a certain famous cartoon characters hair style. However on the more serious side of things i was extremely impressed with my first attempt at creating a stellated dodecahedron. I intend to make it with a thicker paper or card to form a much sturdier structure.

Inspiration For My Final Piece

Here are just a few images/examples of primary research towards my final piece which have given me inspiration.

I found this image and thought it was amazing, how the ice has formed a ball but still keeping the sharp pointy properties which ice has.

This again creates a ball shape with its delicate and fragile form in contrast to its sharp and spikey needle like arms.

This imagery shows good use of repetition creating different shapes images and formations.

The planets relate to my idea for hanging my final pieces, different sizes and forms hanging at different levels.

Known for being expensive and beautiful they are made up of sharp, pointy and rugged edges.

These diamonds are multifaceted which is a look i would like to achieve in my completed 3d design.

Stars, crystals, diamonds and ice, all with their own sharp angles and straight lines produce some spectacular 3D images. Whilst looking at potential 3D paper sculpture i was struck by the resemblance of those made up of triangular shapes, with the stars, diamonds etc and this led me to work on similar lines to produce my finished product.

Final Piece Idea

I was really struggling to come up with an idea for a final piece for the theme repeat. It seems as though a lot of people have looked at nature as a route to go down, and at one point i thought i'd also do this. However i kept on looking for other forms of inspirations as i wasn't completely convinced with the whole 'nature' idea and happened to stumble across something else which inspired me. The idea of having multiple triangles all joined together to form a ball like object almost like a star shape. Then i thought as stars are in the sky i could suspend them by wire or string so they appear to be floating in the air. By creating several of these in different shapes i could create a night sky effect.

Experiments

I went on to experiment with paper folding, a mixture of origami and types of paper folding which was learnt during the workshops.

I think that the Kusudama origami ball would make a good final piece but on a much larger scale. 

I was shocked at how real the toilet paper flowers look after being quite against the idea of trying to create them, definitely pleasantly surprised. 

Now i would like to go on to try out some different experiments on a much larger scale that could be contenders for a final design.

2nd Go At Origami

This time i thought i'd try to create something more 3D, i didn't struggle as much this time which has given me more confidence to try out even more shapes and creations.

First Attempt At Origami

Okay so I thought I'd have a try at origami, didn't actually realise how difficult it is, definitely hats off to anyone who's half decent at it!

My first few attempts went down like lead balloons, and my bedroom floor was simply covered in white screwed up balls of paper. However after persevering this is what i ended up creating, not much i no but i was so proud I'd finally managed to make something.

Peter Callesen

Peter Callesen is a Danish born artist who is known for his exceptional talent with paper. He uses the positive and negative space to tell a story instead of throwing the left over paper away.

Impenetrable Castle, 2005. 

I really do love the detail which is in this piece, some of his work is much more simplistic such as 'The Impossible Meeting, 2005.

I would like to try experimenting with the theme of nature, maybe try out Callesens technique of using the positive and negative space. Initially with flowers or trees and develop it as i get more confident with the paper.
